Flu season is here, however it is not too late to protect yourself. In fact, the CDC notes that flu season typically peaks in February and that March often provides as many influenza cases as does January. This highly contagious respiratory illness can cause mild to severe illness (including death in vulnerable populations). The best way to prevent flu is to get a flu shot each season. Occasionally, people who get the flu shot do contract influenza, but research show that the illness is often less severe and of shorter duration in those who are vaccinated.
The good news is that Longstreet Clinic continues to offer seasonal flu vaccine available at our primary care locations and at our urgent care office in Gainesville. The annual flu shot is covered as preventative care by most insurance providers and is recommended for those 6 months and older, with a few exceptions. Simply call your doctor’s office to set up a visit. Walk-in visits for the flu vaccine are also available at our Urgent Care and Oakwood Family Medicine offices. Cash pricing is also available.
