Longstreet Clinic Center for Weight Management is proud to announce the availability of a new leading-edge, non-surgical treatment for weight loss.
“At the Center for Weight Management, we constantly evaluate new and innovative products emerging in the marketplace to provide access to the most leading-edge treatment options to our patients,” said Robert Richard, M.D., FACS, bariatric surgeon at Longstreet Clinic. “Clinical trials have shown the weight loss achieved with the Obalon Balloon System is meaningful.”
In fact, during a large clinical trial study, Obalon Balloon System patients lost twice as much weight as they did with diet and exercise alone. Six months after the balloons were removed, an average of 89 percent of the weight lost was kept off, when combined with diet and exercise. The majority of adverse side effects were reported as mild and consisted of abdominal pain and nausea (serious side effects were present in less than 0.3 percent of cases).
The Obalon Balloon System is the first and only swallowable, FDA-approved balloon system for weight loss. The non-surgical treatment consists of three lightweight balloons, placed gradually over three months, occupying space in a patient’s stomach. Coupled with a nutrition and exercise program, patients eat less which facilitates weight loss. The Obalon Balloon System is a 6-month treatment for adult patients who are 30 to 100 pounds overweight.
Placement of the Obalon Balloon System typically takes less than 10 minutes in the doctor’s office and does not require sedation. In the clinical study, after placement most patients returned to normal activities with no downtime.
“We are proud to be the first practice in our area offering the Obalon Balloon System,” Dr. Richard said. “It provides a safe and effective option to non-surgical weight loss and provides our patients with an opportunity to maintain a healthier lifestyle.”
