Well child doctor’s visits are important for ensuring a healthy child. From birth to early adolescence, parents will witness the most changes and rapid growth in their child. It is advised that he or she be evaluated regularly by a pediatrician during this significant time of their lives. These visits will include a review of patient history, a complete pediatric physical, an update on immunizations and a growth and development assessment.
The frequency of the recommended check up appointments vary with the age of your child and the immunizations that are advised for that time. It is recommended that your newborn visits the doctor’s office six times before he or she reaches one year and eight times before 18 months. With the rapid rate of development infants experience within their first 18 months, regular visits allow doctors to supervise their growth and progression. Regularity of appointments may also vary as an illness occurs or if your child suffers an ongoing medical condition.
Typical well visit schedule
- Follow-up appointment two to three days after discharge from the hospital
- Appointment at 2 weeks
- Appointments at 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months
- Appointments at 2 years, 2.5 years then annually

Check up appointments also provide parents with knowledge of their child’s development so they are better able to identify the proper care they need to deliver. These visits also offer an opportunity to ask questions or address any anxieties you may have regarding your child’s health or development.
As pediatricians and parents share a common goal for assuring that children are healthy, regularly scheduled appointments can identify any areas of concern or potential risk. By recognizing these alarming matters early, doctors are able to tend to the problem, preventing more serious conditions that could arise in the future.
